Unfortunately, despite their diligent efforts, the horse could not be saved. In an interview with Racing TV, Kearns noted that both Abuffalosoldier and Bangers And Cash suffered what is referred to as a cardiovascular collapse—a term that indicates a sudden and lethal cardiac incident or the rupture of a major blood vessel. "In both situations, we refer to it as a cardiovascular collapse," Kearns explained. "It's challenging to ascertain with certainty whether it was a heart attack or a ruptured vessel, but in either case, it results in an unexpected death."
Kearns highlighted the unpredictability of such occurrences, which can happen suddenly, even in horses that show no previous signs of distress. “It’s a high-pressure situation,” Kearns noted, comparing it to human marathon runners or long-distance athletes. “Though every horse is subject to thorough examinations before and after arriving at the racetrack, these abrupt incidents are extremely hard to foresee.”
The occurrence of two horses experiencing such collapses in the same race is profoundly concerning; however, Kearns highlighted that these incidents are infrequent within the overall scope of the sport. “It's an enormous coincidence that it transpired twice in the same race,” he noted, emphasizing that the details surrounding these incidents are currently under thorough examination.
