Inspiral Gearing Up for Potential Career Finale in Sun Chariot Stakes

Inspiral Gearing Up for Potential Career Finale in Sun Chariot Stakes

Breeders’ Cup repeat bid not completely ruled out, but rated ‘unlikely’.

Inspiral, the star mare trained by John and Thady Gosden, is set for what could be the final outing of her illustrious career in the Virgin Bet Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket next month. The daughter of Frankel, who triumphed in the same race last year, could add another prestigious victory to her already stellar record before bowing out from the track.

Last season, Inspiral secured a Group One treble, with her Sun Chariot win being followed by a brilliant performance at the Breeders' Cup in Santa Anita. While a return to the Breeders’ Cup, this year held at Del Mar, has not been ruled out, her appearance at Newmarket is likely to be the concluding chapter of her racing career, which has seen her capture top-level victories at age two, three, and four.

"She's in great form and all set for Newmarket, depending on the ground," said Chris Richardson, managing director of Cheveley Park Stud, her owners. "We think she's happier back at a mile, but in these Group One races, you can’t miss the break and give away five lengths."

Richardson also hinted that Inspiral's personality is beginning to signal she may be ready for life as a broodmare. "She's telling us she’s ready to have babies, but a final swansong makes sense – and if she surprises us, we’ll see. While America hasn’t been entirely ruled out, it seems unlikely."

While Inspiral may be nearing the end of her racing journey, Cheveley Park’s future in the fillies division looks promising. Sir Michael Stoute’s duo, Formal and Anna Swan, have shown early promise in their careers. Formal boosted her profile with an impressive win at Leicester this week, and bigger races may be on the horizon for her before the season ends. Anna Swan, who made a sparkling debut at Yarmouth, is being given time to develop further.

"Anna Swan just needs a bit more time, and we’re being patient," said Richardson. "There’s no one more patient than Sir Michael, and it’s exciting to have a couple of very nice fillies."

Cheveley Park is also looking forward to the return of their Royal Ascot winner, Unequal Love. Trained by William Haggas, she is targeting the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot on October 19, following her solid third-place finish in the Group One Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock.

Richardson added, "We were thrilled with Unequal Love’s run at Haydock, and Ascot looks like the next step."
